                                        Levee 2021

On January 1st, 2021, the Clan Logan Society of Canada began it's first event of the year by attending the Black Watch veteran's Association Levee. This is a social event held on  New Year's day by the Governor General of Canada,  the lieutenant governors,  military establishments, municipalities, and other institutions. The word levee (from French, noun use of infinitive lever, "rising", from Latin levāre, "to raise") originated in the
levée du soleil (rising of the sun) of King Louis XIV (1643–1715). It was his custom to receive
his male subjects in his bedchamber just after arising, a practice that subsequently spread
throughout Europe. It was in Canada that the levee became associated with New Year's Day. The fur
traders had the tradition of paying their respects to the master of the fort (their government
representative) on New Year's Day. This custom was adopted by the governor general and lieutenant
governors for their levees. If we remember last year, Clan Logan attended the Régiment de Maisonneuve
Levee. This year of course, everything went online due to the current situation.

The Black Watch Veterans' association did their Levee as they do each year and it was a great success.
It was a fun little get together that allowed all members to discuss amongst each other and share for
a few hours. A rather nice way to starting 2021. We take pride in participating in various events,
even the virtual ones like this one. We hope that this year, the situation will improve compared to
2020 and that we will be able to conduct activities like fundraisers to help out with our own members.
We had a drink or two and wished ourselves a wonderful New Year, something we will be doing frequently
with this group through the years.
